Lesson 4 – Symmetry
Just as we consider symmetrical faces to be beautiful the same judgment we apply to architecture and interior design.
It’s no coincidence that the Taj Mahal has amazed us for centuries with it’s perfectly symmetrical marble towers. So there is also no coincidence The Blue Mosque that isn’t actually blue attracts millions of tourists every year. Its statue rises above the skyline of Istanbul with the symmetrical minarets as the symbol of this vibrant city.
Go inside Topkapi palace and you will notice the same passion for order even in abundance.
Why are we so attracted to symmetry? Why do we associate symmetry with beauty, balance, harmony? Scientists say that we are biologically wired to be drawn to symmetrical features in people because it is somehow related to a strong immune system, therefore with strong genes. So beauty is another expression of the likelihood of an individual’s offspring to survive.
Designers say that the easiest way to make sure your space is balanced and attractive is to keep to the law of symmetry.
However, as much as we love the balance of symmetry we also like to make a difference. So probably using the same pieces, angles and sizes might be too much or too boring. A small difference in positioning an object or an unexpected splash of color can change the vibe of the space and make it unique. In the end, beauty is in the eye of the beholder…
Lesson 5 – Add a touch of glam
We are in the city of sultans so of course there will be glam! Besides, what is colour and romance without the glamorous touch?
Even in old touristic places such as Sultanahmet you can bump into a place that looks made for fabulous girls going out for brunch, such as the one below.
If you are looking for designer jewels or just a fancy place to have a coffee, Galata area is the place to be.
So what is the glam style all about? Is it about fancy chandeliers and heavy velvet armchairs? I believe that glam is all about making a space stand out, making it desirable and something to aspire to. Whether you choose an impressive lighting object or create a vintage setting of decorations in a bookcase it’s all about creating an air of allure, romance, adventure.
Today’s style magazines and retailers offer countless options from baroque furniture, Louis style mirrors to dark decorative skulls for a more rock’n’roll inspiration.
